L’album Random Access Memories è stato considerato dai critici musicali come un album disco, pur traendo influenza dal progressive rock e dal pop. L’album presenta collaborazioni con Giorgio Moroder, Panda Bear, Julian Casablancas, Todd Edwards, DJ Falcon, Chilly Gonzales, Nile Rodgers, Paul Williams, Nathan East e Pharrell Williams.
Random Access Memories ha ricevuto i Grammy Awards come Album of the Year, Best Dance / Electronica Album e Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical per la 56a edizione dei Grammy Awards.
Il brano “Instant Crush” è stata scritta, prodotta ed eseguita dal duo di musica elettronica francese Daft Punk e dal musicista americano Julian Casablancas. È stato pubblicato come quarto singolo dal quarto album in studio dei Daft Punk, Random Access Memories. Il singolo è stato al numero 58 nella lista delle 100 migliori canzoni del 2013 della rivista Rolling Stone.
Mentre lavoravano alla colonna sonora di Tron: Legacy nel 2010, i Daft Punk hanno incontrato Casablancas nel loro studio tramite un amico comune. Il duo, che è fan della band di Casablancas, The Strokes, gli ha presentato una traccia demo strumentale da utilizzare nel prossimo album dei Daft Punk. Casablancas ha risposto favorevolmente alla demo dopo averla ascoltata e successivamente ha accettato di fornire la voce di accompagnamento, formando la base per quello che sarebbe diventato “Instant Crush“.
Per quanto riguarda il testo di Instant Crush, Casablancas ha ricordato che i Daft Punk lo hanno avvicinato con “l’intera storia” di ciò che il duo voleva ottenere. A un certo punto si è chiesto se la canzone dovesse chiamarsi “Summer Crush” sulla base di come i Daft Punk descrivevano l’idea. Il concetto prevedeva di riflettere sul ricordo d’infanzia di incontrare una ragazza, ma perdere l’opportunità di stare con lei. Casablancas inizialmente ha basato i suoi testi su questa storia insieme alla scrittura fornita da Paul Williams, ma ha ritenuto che il risultato fosse “piatto”. Casablancas ha scartato le linee a favore di quelle che ha cantato spontaneamente per adattarsi alla struttura di “Instant Crush’‘.
La canzone come appare sull’album è stata coprodotta e cantata da Casablancas, che ha anche suonato la chitarra solista. I Daft Punk hanno suonato la chitarra aggiuntiva su “Instant Crush”, oltre a tastiere e sintetizzatori. Il critico John Balfe ha considerato la canzone “appropriatamente Strokes-ish, anche se la voce caratteristica di Casablancas è sostenuta in modo abbastanza sostanziale da un vocoder.” De Homem-Christo (produttore discografico francese è il cofondatore, assieme a Thomas Bangalter, dei Daft Punk) ha osservato: “È vero che non è il suo solito registro, è il modo in cui Julian ha reagito alla traccia quindi per noi è ancora più emozionante “.
